Inoculate Your System

Before you install Windows 95, uninstall any antivirus programs you have.

Get It in Writing

Before installing Windows 95, exit Windows and type MSD at the DOS prompt, then press Enter. From the File menu, select Print Report/Select Report All/OK. Keep this printout to answer questions on interrupts or memory addresses that pop up during installation.

Copy, Cut, Paste!

Ctrl+C copies the currently selected file, folder, text or picture to Clipboard, while Ctrl+X cuts those items and copies them to Clipboard. Ctrl+V pastes Clipboard's contents--files, folders, text or pictures--to the currently selected object.

Keep Explorer Handy

Open My Computer/C: /Windows. Find the file Explorer. Drag and drop it to the desktop, and change the name from "Shortcut to Explorer" to "Explorer." Double-clicking on the desktop icon will bring up Explorer.

Forget Your ABCs

Explorer knows the alphabet backward and forward. To view a folder's contents in reverse alphabetical order, select View/Details, then click on the Name bar. The Name bar toggles between alphabetical order and reverse alphabetical order.

Size Up Your Files

In Explorer, select View/Details, then click on the Size bar to see the files listed in file-size order, biggest files first. Click on the Size button again, and the smallest files will be listed first.

Get an Updated View

Press F5 to update Explorer's contents list.

What's New?

Select View/Details, then click on the Modified bar to tell Explorer to show files in the order in which they were created or edited. Clicking on the Modified bar toggles between viewing the oldest or newest files.

Who Needs Sherlock Holmes?

If you're looking for a specific document in a folder but don't know which folder it is, select the folder in the left pane of Explorer, then select Find/Files or Folders from the Tools menu. Click on the Advanced tab and type in the string of text you're looking for, then click on the Find Now button.

Typecasting In Explorer

Select View/Details, then click on the Type bar to list files in alphabetical order according to file type (applications, DAT files and so on). Click on the bar again for reverse alphabetical order.

Clear Start-Menu Clutter

Empty your Start menu's Documents item by clicking on the Start button and selecting Taskbar from the Settings menu. Click once on the Start Menu Programs tab and then click on the Clear button.

Set Up Multiple File Associations

Documents are usually associated with a single application. Normally, when you double-click on a document type, the system tells Windows to open a specific application, then open the document in that application. Expand your options by double-clicking on My Computer. Select View/Options/File Types. Choose the document type you'd like to open in other apps in the Registered File Types list. Click on Edit/New. Type something like "Open in <your application>" in the Action field. Click on the Browse button to find the application. Click OK. Now, whenever you right-click on that document type, you'll see the option you typed in.

Find It Fast

To search one of Explorer's folders, click on the folder you want to search and press the F3 key to bring up the Win95 Find utility with the path you selected.
